EXOMIND at Ohana Health

What is TMS?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation — a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy that uses magnetic pulses to activate specific areas of the brain.

What TMS Is Used For?

Clinically, it is FDA-approved for:

  • Major depression (MDD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Smoking cessation
  • Anxiety symptoms associated with depression

Treatments improve:

  • Brain fog
  • Focus and cognitive support
  • Stress
  • Mood optimization

How It Works

  • A magnetic coil is placed against your head.
  • It creates a magnetic field similar to an MRI.
  • This induces small electrical currents in neurons.
  • Repeated pulses “train” the brain, improving mood and function.

What a Session Is Like?

  • You sit in a comfortable chair or you can lay down in a bed
  • No sedation is needed — you’re awake the whole time.
  • You feel tapping on the scalp.
  • Sessions last ~30 minutes.
  • Most programs run for 4–6 weeks.

Is TMS Safe?

Yes — TMS therapy is considered very safe for most people.
It’s one of the safest brain-based treatments available because it’s:

  • Non-invasive (no surgery)
  • Non-systemic (no drugs in the bloodstream)
  • Done while you are fully awake
  • FDA-approved

Primary Symptoms TMS Is Used For (Clinically Proven)

Depression Symptoms

TMS is FDA-approved mainly for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Typical symptoms include:

  • Persistent sadness or emptiness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Lack of motivation
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Changes in appetite or sleep
  • Feeling hopeless or worthless
  • Irritability
  • Brain fog or slowed thinking

If you’ve tried medications or therapy that didn’t fully help, TMS is often recommended.

Anxiety Symptoms (Especially with Depression)

TMS can reduce anxiety, especially when tied to depression:

  • Chronic worry
  • Feeling on edge
  • Racing thoughts
  • Heart-pounding sensations
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Overthinking or rumination

OCD-Related Symptoms (FDA-approved)

TMS can target areas linked to obsessive-compulsive behaviors:

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts
  • Repetitive actions/rituals
  • Feeling “stuck” mentally
  • High anxiety if routines aren’t performed

Cognitive Symptoms (“Brain Fog”)

Many clinics (including EXOMIND-style programs) use TMS to help with:

  • Mental fatigue
  • Slow or unclear thinking
  • Memory difficulties
  • Lack of focus
  • Trouble completing tasks

This is not officially FDA-approved but commonly offered.

Stress-Related Symptoms

Some people use TMS for:

  • Burnout
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Irritability
  • Poor stress tolerance
  • Trouble sleeping due to stress

Smoking Addiction (FDA-approved)

TMS can reduce nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Who May Be a Good Candidate

Someone who has:

  • Symptoms of depression or anxiety
  • Tried medications that didn’t work well
  • Trouble tolerating antidepressants
  • Cognitive symptoms interfering with daily life
  • A desire for a non-medication option
  • No seizure history (or minimal risk)
